Two nuclear power stations are scheduled to go offline permanently in 2030 and Hinckley C might, just might, be producing power by 2031. I'm pretty sure by then a major chunk of the existing stock of ageing gas fired plant will have been retired/regularly breaking down. Throw in the odd super transformer failure and the short version is we're fucked.
have a PhD in economics: on what measurements and models are all these conclusions made on? What is the actual source of the projections? This all feels like the beer mat Brexit calculations leading to booh! and hurrah! policy views.
I'm fully on board with this but can I ask a question.? Under what circumstances do curtailment charges have to be paid out? I understand that if say a windfarm is able produce electricity but it cannot send it into the grid because the grid doesn't need it or the infrastructure can't handle it then curtailment charges are paid to the energy company. But is that the only condition? I don't understand how the system works but I'm thinking of the forward planning of electricity capacity. Suppose they plan say 24 hours ahead and tell a particular generator that they want it ready to go the following day then if it turns out they don't need it but there is wind available then curtailment charges come into effect. But suppose they worked out that they don't need that generator tomorrow and tell it so then curtailment would not apply?
