Your Climate Skeptic subscription
On Tuesday September 29th, the Climate Skeptic’s Substack account was accessed without authorisation in what appears to have been a malicious attack by a hacker. The intruder unsubscribed all our subscribers and then tried to upload a spam mailing list. That breached Substack’s Spam and Phishing Policy, so our account was automatically suspended, which may or may not have been the hacker’s intention. Thankfully, Substack blocked the upload before any spam or phishing emails were sent, and has since restored our account and our subscribers.
If you noticed that your subscription had disappeared, or that you hadn’t received the newsletter for a day or two, that’s why. If you’re reading this, your subscription has been restored and you don’t need to do anything.
Paying subscribers should already have received an email from me explaining what this means for their subscription. If you’re a paying subscriber and haven’t received my email, or anything on your statement doesn’t look right, please email me at info@dailysceptic.org and I’ll sort it out.
Substack has confirmed there’s no record of our subscriber list being downloaded. No bank details or full card numbers were involved: payments are handled by Stripe, and neither we nor Substack can see them. Even so, please be wary of any unexpected emails claiming to be from us or Substack, especially ones about payments or “resubscribing”. We will never ask for card details by email.
We’ve reported the incident to the police and to the Information Commissioner’s Office, and we’ve taken steps to beef up our security to make it much harder for this to happen again.
We don’t yet know who was behind the attack or why. But whoever it was, they won’t stop us publishing – and if you aren’t already a premium subscriber, please do consider becoming one. You’ll be able to access all our paywalled content and be supporting one of the few sceptical voices in the climate debate. Just click on the subscribe button below.
